Star Island Retreat

The 2007 retreat on Star Island was such a success that attendees requested additional time on the island in 2008. So, rather than three days, the retreat will be five days - September 8 - 12, 2008. We will have time for more prompts, time to edit what we have written, individual conferences with the facilitator, open mic for writers to read to participants of all retreats on the island, and time to relax.

Description of the Retreat:

The workshop leader provides prompts that open your mind to all sorts of possibilities. During the last two retreats, WriteLines writers have produced poems for publication, written numerous stories with the sea as a backdrop, started novels, and written stories long-forgotten about combat in World War II. As with all of our retreats, this is suitable for beginning, progressing, and professional writers.

This retreat is also perfect for writers already working on a project. During the 2007 workshop, one writer arrived with nearly 200 pages written on a novel she had started at the retreat two years before. Her intent was to spend quiet time alone writing; however, on the ferry ride over, another attendee encouraged her to attend the sessions and see if the prompts would inspire new scenes. In fact, that is exactly what happened - ten new scenes, to be precise! So come with your writing in progress or come with an empty notebook. Just come, ready to write, write, write.

Six miles off the coast of New Hampshire on a small island in the Isles of Shoals, you will forget your daily life and concentrate on drinking in the beauty around you. You will sit in a wicker rocker on a verandah that surrounds the 1920's hotel, sip on a lime rickey, stare at panoramic views of the ocean and ask, "Does it get any better than this?" The answer to the question, of course, is no.

Three buffet-style meals are served every day. The beds and rooms are spartan, yet comfortable. Showers are available twice a week (more depending on the water supply). The terrain is rocky and uneven. It is an adventure you will talk about all year - until you attend next year and return home with new stories to tell.

Here is what some of the participants had to say about the 2007 retreat.

"My heart is full; everything was perfect." Robert, Maine

"Dale, your style of working with others is both personal and professional. It's not easy to give assurance and confidence to each participant, but you succeeded and excelled." Ruth, Massachusetts

"The technique is fun and freeing; excellent teacher/facilitator." Elena, Rhode Island

"Stressless approach to writing." Ann, New York
